I've just got this Aspire 3000 (3004WLMI) with XP on it. I have done that, i have even reformatted the PC and reset everything and still the same issue. Consider donating to the Electronic Frontier Foundation! I can reconnect but this keeps happening every couple minutes and is very annoying.

My sister in law claims to have not downloaded anything to the laptop but I don't know w what to do at this point. I wonder if the recent Comcast speed update had anything to do with having to adjust the driver settings? It has a Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 network card with the latest driver.
